Melanoma is a skin cancer that commonly develops in Melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin or pigment for the skin, hair and eyes. As for how often you should book an appointment, it depends on your individual risk factors and the recommendations of your doctor. In general, people with a higher risk of developing skin cancer, such as those with a personal or family history of the disease or a large number of moles, may need to be screened more frequently.
